Dear all,

What is the difference between serrated and non-serrated flange face finish ?
How to decide when to go for serrated and non-serrated flange face finish ?

As per MSS-SP-6 Table 1,
For ductile iron flanges Flat face, roughness is serrated 6.3 micro meter

or

Serrated : spiral or concentric, 11 to 50 per in. What does this indicate?

Serrated is not smooth, non-serrated is smooth.

Ductile Iron means the surface is "rough", but not machined.

Spiral and x per inch is a machined finish to create a roughened surface to "grip" the gasket and in theory provide more obstructions to gas or liquid flow.

My motto: Learn something new every day

Also: There's usually a good reason why everyone does it that way

Serrated finish is oftemn used to provide a seal between to pipe face for pressure 900lbs and below. Generaly you will see them on Raised face end conncetions. The easist way to describe it is if you were to run your nail down the surface it would feel like a very shallow thread form from a small stud or set screw.
Thanks

On deciding flange-type:

Flange (and other specifications) are often given by end-user either as written norm/specifications or 'normal practise'. Check!

If you are free to decide, the best bet would be to check the normal, or a good and reliable gasket supplier for gasket types and prices, and pro/cons for your particular case. All pressure, fluids and mechanical and process data would be necessary.
