Shared use path work zone traffic control

A contractor wants to use our path to access the underside of a state-owned bridge. They will be encroaching on the path.

The MUTCD doesn't provide a lot of guidance here. Other than warning signs, fencing between users and the work area, and temporary widening if needed, does anyone have any suggestions? Has anyone else seen path TTC plans or guidance they could share?

Sorry to ask but: please define "use our path"....work inside your lane closure? Is your closure long-term? daily? What kind of work are you performing? What is the access for? Is the bridge an overpass...over your closure?

We're not doing any work. A contractor will be repairing the underside of the superstructure, and the county I work for owns the shared-use bike/hike path along the river. The contractor wants to use the path to get to the abutment and first pier.

We want to keep the path open, as it is an ADA accessible route, and there is no acceptable detour.

Is the contractor encroaching with vehicles and equipment (things that are movable) or do they need to tear up the existing walk?

How long will they be encroaching? If it's a short period of time, what about flaggers?

Is it easy enough to tell the contractor to work at night? Assuming this path does not have lights there should be no users.

Not sure you're going to find any standardized pedestrian trail TTCPs.

After you(or your folks) prepare documents for the contractor to sign, and assuming the contr. will sign them and is fully insured/bonded for damages/injuries that might occur.....

Ditto on the TCP's, however there is a quite a bit of language about Ped. access/diversion and such....however...might be tough/cost prohibitive to make a diversion ADA compliant.

If the work cannot be accomplished in any other fashion...I would suggest letting the public know that the trail will be closed for bridge repair (surely they would understand) and let the contractor know that after some period of time (week?) a punitive 'path user' cost will be assessed per day when the work is still ongoing (performance bond,get money upfront in escrow?)after the deadline....and then use the $$ for upgrades to the hike and bike trail.

I just heard from DOT that they will be off the path, except when moving materials and equipment. They'll have flaggers when they are on the path. That simplifies things quite a bit.

They have already submitted a bond to cover any path damages.

They will be redecking the bridge, so they will need either debris nets under the path, or sidewalk shed over the path.
