Hi,

I am looking at a design example on shear lug weld design in AISC DG 1. For the shear lug weld check, the DG does not use directionality factor for designing the welds. Is there a reason for that? The forces are pretty much perpendicular to the weld. why cant directionality factor of 1.5 be used for the weld design?

Thanks

Weld directionality is a relatively recent addition to the AISC spec I believe, came into CSA S16 first and then went in AISC when I was still an EIT maybe ~10 years ago iirc? The first printing of 2nd edition DG1 (is there a more recent edition?) was 2006, and since this isn't an error I doubt they'd go back and revise the check. Just my guess though, someone should confirm there isn't another reason or I'm not out to lunch on the dates.
