Hi ,

I am using a shear pin for stem protection
at maximum torque. See picture attached.

How to calculate shear pin failure before stem failure?

Following are the inputs I have,

dia of shear pin,d = .625 in
dia of stem ,D = 1.5 in
Max Torque ,T = 3250 in.lbf
UTS of shear pin = 58000 psi
Yield strength of shear pin = 36000 psi

Thanks !

Pull out your favorite strength of materials reference and look up double shear.

All shear and no bending calc's if the diagram is correct.
