Gentlemen:

I need help finding the shear strength of
416 SST @36 RC. Can anyone help? Hopefully
with a quotable reference...Thanks

I don't think you will find this. It isn't listed in the ASM Handbook series, nor MIL-HDBK-5, nor at the Carpenter Internet site.

This is a simple test to perform, so you can obtain the information yourself at minimal cost.

You can always use the relationship:

[τ] = 0.6 [·] [σ]

where

[τ] is the shear strength
[σ] is the tensile strength

This is rooted in the ductile failure criteria (Tresca, von Mises), but less precise due to variable strain hardening in tension vs. shear, plus higher scatter in fracture vs. yielding.

We built fixtures and measured it our selves. Three plates of tool steel with a precision reamed hole. Run the test as double shear to keep all of the loading straight.
60% is a good starting place, but in austenitic materials the strain hardening changes things.
In this grade there is little work hardening, but the possible variation in hardness across the diameter will have an impact.
