Hi,

Please, can anybody explain what stress does the shear pin will see when the shaft is subjected to torsion? (See image attached)
I calculated as below,
Torsional Shear stress for a shaft (mild steel) = 0.75 x UTS of shaft
Shear stress for the shear pin (double shear) = 2 x UTS of pin X 0.577 X Shear pin area

Now my question is, the shaft will be subjected to torsional shear stress as there is a direct twisting moment, so I have used 0.75 times the ultimate tensile strength of the material. But for the shear pin, it is pure shear in the transverse direction (transverse shear). So, i have used the factor .577 as per distortion theory criterion.
Is this correct? if not what else is the right method..
