Good Morning.

I was after some ideas and / or advice regarding the following.

See attached image of a typical sheet metal box. 2mm thick and seal welded in all 4 corners. There is only 1mm space to the outside of each face.

Now the problematic area. The top 4 edges. These are edges of 2mm sheet. Imagine this has a hinged lid which can swing open and then lock shut using a latch of some sort. In what ways could you create a seal on the top edges? Any special types of gasket which could be used specifically for this?

Mucho more info need-o.

What do you mean "seal"? 5MPa? Air? Water? IP65?
What's it sealing against?
How much clamping force ya got?
How good is your sheet metal fabrication?
How flat is the top edge?
How flat is the thing you're sealing against?
What's the environment (heat, chemicals, etc)
You got any latex allergy?
(etc)

Shawthing6927,

Take a look at these. Hammond's enclosures push the sheet metal edge against a fat gasket. You should be able to download CAD models.

Can you use an oversized lid with downturn edges and an offset hinge? You can then put a neoprene or silicone gasket continuously around the top edge.

Is there some compelling reason why you cannot bend a small flange in, or out, on the top edge and seal against that?
B.E.

You are judged not by what you know, but by what you can do.

A 2mm edge is fairly thick. Provided that it's sheared cleanly and deburred, a foam gasket in an oversized lid should survive sealing against it for a while.

There are only half a bazillion other ways to do it...
