We are considering sheetpiles as an option for some future SOEs. What do you think about the reasonability of the following guidelines for sheetpile installation:
Residual Soils (S1 and S2): The S1 stratum has blow counts of 16 bpf or less and the S2 stratum has blow counts between 16 and 60 blows. It is expected that sheetpiles can be driven into both stratum except in thick zones where N-values are 40 to 60 bpf and zones of less weathered materials. Thin less weathered zones may be able to be driven through. Rate of driving will be good in the S1 stratum with low potential for pile top, tip or interlock damage. Within the D2 stratum, driving rate will slow and the potential for pile damage will increase.
Decomposed Rock (D1): The D1 stratum has blow counts between 60 and 100 bpf and is expected to result in practical refusal for driven sheetpile. Attempts to achieve much penetration in this stratum will likely result in pile damage.
