We are working on a maintenance of traffic scheme for a 2 lane rural road that will be widened to a 5 lane urban road. We have 60" and 72" culverts that must be constructed through an existing embankment and under the proposed widened embankment while maintaining traffic.
My question is this: Is it feasible to excavate the upstream side of the existing embankment with a vertical cut of around 25' using sheet piling to retain the soil. If it is feasible, approximately how deep below the bottom of the cut would the sheet piling need to be driven.
I know this is a vague description, but we are not designing the piling. We just want to make sure not to propose a scheme that is unreasonable.
