Shell Element Torsion Model Problems

Hi,

I'm relatively new to ABAQUS (and FEM in general) so please do state the obvious!

I need to create a Torsion simulation, using CAE, to find the torsion constant (J) for an irregular geometry (several pairs of tape springs). I've done this by fixing one end of the shell and using a kinematic coupling on the other end to apply a moment to the centre of mass giving a rotation around the z axis.

The model runs fine with no errors or warnings but in the output the end with the kinematic coupling is expanding in the x and y directions (essentially scaling linearly in the XY plane)

The coupling is constrained in all 6 DOF and the moment is applied to the same reference point as is used but the constraint.

I have also tried creating an instance with a plate instead of just the constraint and the plate scales up too. The plate has a high younges modulus so should not deform.

Having studied the users manual I can't see what I've done wrong! Any help what so ever would be greatly received!

Thanks,

Carl
