Getting a new carbon steel bundle fabricated in ethane service, approx 7.3m long. Tie rod material is supplied in 6m lengths and therefore requires joining to make up the length shortfall. So I am looking for guidance on what is standard practice in extending the tie rods, thinking of welding and annealing or some sort of threaded connection with a locking device/ spot welded to avoid it unscrewing in the future.

Thanks for the assistance in advance.

If your tie rods are ordinary sizes and materials I'd just weld 'em. That'd let you use ordinary spacer tubing, etc.

6 m? Really?

Mike

IMHO, welding and annealing very long rod materials does not sound like a very good plan.

Have you considered a turnbuckle with spot-welded locking nuts on both ends ? You have the benefit of adjustability and possible future disassembly.

I agree with SnTMan with his comments about 6m ....

Are you thinking in 6m with screw full length?. If yes, you are wrong. If not, change the supplier

Yes. Buy plain rod, cut it to length, thread 1" one end, 2" the other. Give or take.
