Shoring Suite Question 1

Hi There, first post to the site. I do quite a bit of retaining wall/bulkhead design in coastal South Carolina. I typically like to use composites; however, this is southern yellow pine country and it's cheap. A standard timber wall along the coast here is 2 or 3 by 6 "sloppy v" timber lagging, wales, and soldier pile with timber pile deadmen. If you are unfamiliar, sloppy V is a vertically driven timber "sheet" with a "v" groove. SPW911 isn't any good for designing this type of arrangement. My question is: Will Civil Tech's Shoring Suite be a benefit to designing this type of arrangement? I know that most timber lagging design is done with the timbers horizontal, I'm looking at a vertical arrangement. Thanks

You can model the vertical boards as sheet piling. In the Shoring module, on Page D (Options), Line 5, you can choose wood as the material. The problem is trying to enter the allowable bending stress. On Page D, Line 7, you will have to manually enter the ultimate wood stress as the Fy. On Line 8, you will have to enter a factor to reduce the ultimate to the allowable. On Line 4, you will have to enter the moment of inertia per linear foot of wall, or you can just let the program solve for the bending moment and shear and then do hand calcs to determine the required section for the vertical wood.

Thank you for the response. I just wanted to make sure that the program would do it before I try to convince the boss man to buy it.
