Hi,

I am new to this forum.

I am currently doing a short circuit analysis of a 6kv-industrial net. My problem is that the net has many Is-Limiters (short circuit current limiter - an ABB product)in it. Can anybody suggest how to do modelling of the same or account for the same for doing realistic short circuit analysis.

If any software has this as built in feature then kindly let me know that too

thanks in advance

It would be tough to automate. The limiter does not limit based on the available fault current at its location, but rather it limits based on the fault current at the fault. The fault current may or may not be high enough for an upstream limiter to actually limit. You pretty much have to look at a specific fault and at all upstream devices and see how they respond for that specific fault.

I know that the SKM package gives you the option of plotting TCCs based on a specific fault location rather than the standard plot showing the maximum fault current at each protective device. That would at least simplify the problem.

I did look at the ABB IS limiters for a project quite recently where we have excess fault levels on some existing OCB switchgear, unfortunately the HSE do not recognise this asa fail-safe system so we have gone to reactors..

Looking at the ABB datasheet, it appears that these are best modelled in CAPTOR as a fuse.

Excaliber2006,

Eventhough ABB has named it as "Is-LIMITER", it consists of fuses and limits the peak short circuit current Is (IEC term).

Therefore in short circuit studies, it should model as a "fuse".
