i'm desinging fire sprinkler systems for houses per nfpa 13d. we are running into problemes w/ acsessing vaulted ceilinig areas w/ pendent heads because of beams that are not drillable. my installer decided to use horizontal sidewalls instead of pendants. well when he gave me a redline drwg of how it was installed so i could submit an as-built; i noticed that he was using sidewall heads perpendicular to the slope which is not allowed. further research says i can't use a sidewall unless i run it parrallel to the slope and at the highest point of the peak (nfpa 13 2007 edition8.7.4.2.2). but the max slope is 2:12 and i'm dealing w/ anything from 8:12 to 12:12. and even if i had a 2:12 theres 18" deep exposed beams that run along the peak. so i guess my question is: is there a head out there or an idea any of you may have that solves this problem? thank you all in advance.

head on each side of the beam not nessciraly next to each other, maybe one near the peak and one down???????

cannot afford 2007

but something like fig 8.6.4.1.3a 2002 or b head does not have to be at the peak 8.6.4.1.3.1, 8.8.4.1.3

Look at:

You can use HSWs perpendicular to the slope in this configuration. However, you are limited to smooth ceilings, so if your beams run up the slope, you are in trouble. Also, the listing is only for max pitch of 8:12.

I think this is what you are looking for.
