I'm looking for a simple AC or DC motor that is inexpensive and requires little electronics to control. I'm looking for a motor that I can reverse but speed control and true positioning are not an issue. I would like it to be a low RPM and higher torque motor (60-100 in-oz) but a higher rpm and lower torque motor would be acceptable. This will be used in a household or kitchen appliance that will require the motor to produce a high toque at almost stall conditions to overcome a friction load. Does anyone know of a type of motor that would fit my needs?

It's hard to beat a gearmotor for $/oz-in in low speed, high-torque applications. A 12V DC motor, 12VDC wall transformer, a pot and a DPDT switch should be all you need for speed and direction control. Check surplus sites for the gear motor or take apart an old whirring toy.

Bodine electric manufactures inverter duty motors that may be exactly what you are looking for. They also have "Pacesetter" VFD's that will allow you to control speed and/or direction with some simple wiring. Try and I believe you will find what you are looking for. Bodine is also an excellent company to deal with in all respects and some times have special deals on discontinued drives/motors etc which are nice if you have a one time application.

Hope this helps.
