I've set up a simple problem in Abaqus (static), an eighth of a sphere (symmetry) being compressed by a plate. The plate was constructed as an analytical rigid part, while the sphere is a 3-d deformable part.

I've define simple surface to surface contact in the Initial step (the outside of the plate being master, the outside surface of the sphere being the slave) along with 3 boundary conditions, one on each side in the x, y, z, again due to symmetry of the part.

In step-1 I've kept the interaction and bcs, but added another one, a y displacement on the analytically rigid plate (plus the standard X, Z etc equal to 0 for the plate).

Additionally, I've added a constraint as my analytically rigid part and defined the reference point.

My results are as follows:


I keep getting a odd clipping of the rigid plate and part. It also seems that my plate is only applying its displacement to a point on my sphere, rather than across the surface. I would expect that as the top of the sphere is compressed more and more the surface would contact the plate and thus produce essentially an egg type structure. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I feel there may be something simple I'm missing but I've check it half a dozen times to no avail.

Try using NLGEOM as a lineae solution will assume small displacements.
