As you can see by my tag, I'm a structural engineer, so this homemade motor I'm making probably isn't anything particulary exciting for most of you guys. I used a 3" nail armature with ~30 ga. coated wire wrapped around it to create the electromagnet, rotating on a wood dowel. I used $1.50 home depot permanent magnets for the north and south poles and powered it all with a 6V battery. It spun around 900 rpm, which I think is decent, but not that great considering that I used a 6 V battery.

The next obvious step in my electric motor spree is to do something with it. I realize my motor is useless with only 2 poles, since it will never start spinning unless I flick the armature to get it going initially. I'm looking for a site with a good explanation on how to best make a 3 pole or possibly 4 pole motor. The best my "ignorant" mind could come up with for a 4 pole motor involves two armatures, with only 1 armature active at one time.

Any advice or tips you guys could give along with any helpful links would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I'd love to hear about y'alls' homemade machines (in layman terms of course).

Do a google search for "beakman's electric motor".
