Hi,

I'm on a committee which is involved in setting standards by which real estate developers must submit .dwg's to county taxing authorities. I used to use Autocad a lot around the year 2000, but since then I've mostly been involved with the ESRI line of GIS software.

One of the nice features of GIS software is that all geometric features have an attribute table linked up to them. Thus, a certain line or polygon can have any number of pieces of data "bound" to it.

So.....What I'm interested in is facilitating easy transfer from Autocad to GIS. By far the biggest helper with this would be if Autocad had a method for binding data - even a single 50-character string - to a given piece of geometry.

Does this functionality exist? Any ideas where I should start researching it?

Thanks in Advance and Thanks for Reading,
rs

A commom method is with eXtended data (Xdata); you can attach/bind all sorts of information. The easy way is using the commands XDATA and XDLIST, available if you have Express Tools. Read about it in acad_dev.chm in AutoCAD's help folder.

Thanks for replying. Is similar functionality available without any add-ons?

I think we can convince the real estate developers to leverage existing AutoCad functionality, but it will be more difficult to convince them to buy, train for, and use an add-on. :)

I looked at the (native AutoCad) Hyperlink function, but this looks inappropriate for what I'm trying to do.

Any other ideas?

You can assign attibutes to blocks by using the ATTDEF (attribute define) command. What is nice about this command is that you can use ATTEXT command to extract attributes from a drawing into a list or report form. Hope this helps. John
