Is it possible to create a simplified views of a complex assembly in a drawing. We have a model that is composed of 500 parts and would like to generate multiple sheets with simplified views showing step by step of the assembly.

Configurations is one way of doing this. Create simplified configurations in your part and assembly files and reference these configurations in your drawing.

Definitely configurations.

I would create the configs of each step of the process, this also is excellant for revisions in the future. If a step changes, simple modify the configuration. It is much easier and better organized than the alternative which is to hide and show components for each step. Each config can even contain an exploded config within.

One method I tend to use is to organize my into a folder called "HARDWARE" such as bolts, nuts, washers etc. This helps when you want to create simplified assemblies. All you have to do in the configuration is to suppress the folder to remove the hardware.
