Hi,

I have a tank with no data for the nozzle and it is to be determine by the engineer. How do we determine the size of the nozzle? The flow rate is given. Can the nozzle size be determined by Q=aV formula to get the size?

One must presume that there will be piping connected to this nozzle. It would be useful to know the diameter of that piping as well as the intended flange and facing. Perhaps the piping designer or process engineer for the client knows the appropriate information.
 
Yes, pipe size is usually determined by velocity. Use a velocity in the range of 3-8 ft/sec for pumped fluids with properties similar to water. If the fluid has other properties such as a high viscosity, you might want to investigate further.

There are some other considerations such as location of nozzle, function of tank, minimum nozzle size, fluid level height, etc. that may influence your decision.

Inlet nozzles are to be sized based on ρ∗v2 as follows:
• ρ∗v2 max (kg.m.s –2)= Around 1500 if no inlet device is foreseen
• ρ*v2 max (kg.m.s –2)= Around 3000 if half pipe or baffle inlet device is foreseen
• ρ*v2 max (kg.m.s –2)= Around 6000 if Schoepentoeter or other vane pack inlet device is foreseen
Outlet nozzles are to be sized by the same criteria which are used for line sizing.
 
Mentioned criteria is mostly used for sizing of vessel's nozzles, then not to be applied to storage tanks. For the tanks, due to large diameter and because the maximum velocity of liquid in relevant pump's discharge line is lower than 2 m/s. the nozzles sizes could be same as corresponding lines sizes...
 
For large pipes, 24" and above, I often reduce one size at the tank to save money on the valve.
 
There must be P&ID drawing.

From this drawing all nozzle size must be shown.


 
So why can't you go out and "as-built" the tank nozzles, and generate a drawing!?? ...I've been doing it for the last 20 years.

Similar ρ∗v2 criteria with slight difference is available in Shell DEP 31.22.05.11-Gen (December 2007) Manual Gas/Liquid Separators_Type selection and Design Rules within "Appendix II Sizing of Feed and Outlet Nozzles".
