First, a little background. I am performing an evaluation on an existing vessel and have found that the bending and hoop stresses at the cone to shell juncture limit the MAWP of the vessel(per COMPRESS). After discussions with the client, we have been tasked with performing the calculations for an adequately sized stiffening ring to be installed near the juncture.

Has anyone had experience with sizing a stiffening ring for installation near a cone to shell juncture where the half apex angle of the cone is greater than 30 degrees, and if so how would one go about that?

I am thinking that FEA would be a possible approach; however, I would like to explore other possible options.
