Sizing Guidelines for Boiler Ignitors / Pilots

Are there any guidelines for estabishing the heat release requirements for ignitors or pilots in large boilers? I believe some operators call these startup burners. They can be used to take a boiler through much of the warmup curve and also used to light off the main burners. Is the design heat release based on a percentage of the main burner heat release, type and flowrate of fuel in the main burner, or some other factors. Thanks.

The answer is yes, but I am sorry I can't remember what the specific guidelines are. Are you familiar with the book "Steam-its generation and uses" by B&W? If the answer isn't in there, I don't know where else to look. About 4-5 years ago I did a 2 oil start up burner system for a large #6 oil fired power boiler that required that the start up burners be able to warm up the boiler and allow the unit to be put on line up and run up to about 10% of load. Then the boiler would be warm enough and have enough atomizing steam pressure to start bringing on the #6 oil guns (as well as 6 oil heating steam). But I can't remember what the sizing parameters were. Sorry. I'll look in my "Steam" tomorrow and see if I can see anything if I remember.
