I occasionally open a sketch just to double check a dimension, no intention of modifying anything. When I "finish sketch" and go into manufacturing, all of my operations need to be regenerated. The only way around this is to undo after I exit the sketch. However if I forget to undo and go into manufacturing, I'm screwed. I can't undo back to before I opened the sketch, even though thats just a couple moves back. Solidworks has an exit no change function, but I can't find anything like that in NXs sketcher.

I'm pretty sure I saw this exact functionality listed in a "What's New" document for either NX7 or NX7.5. I'm just jotting this off the top of my head though; perhaps others can verify or point you to the functionality if it exists in NX 7?

Actually, I just spoke to someone at GTAC about this and other sketch related issues and she said it sounded like a bug (although she admitted she knew next to nothing about Cam). I myself found it odd the system wasn't smart enough to know I hadn't changed anything. If the solid doesn't need to be regenerated, why then do the cam ops have to?

I assume that it is a bug too.
There is no reason, that I can think of, of why what you mentioned should happen.

It's NOT a bug, it's just a lot more complicated than it looks, which is why we actually had a project in NX 7.5 to address the 'requirement' that after entering the Sketch task and IRRESPECTIVE of what we might have done while there, if we wanted to, we can now leave and have the system behave as if NOTHING had happened, period.

So yes, to accomplish this there is an explicit option being added to the Sketcher in NX 7.5...

Task -> Exit Sketch

...which will basically perform a comprehensive Undo-like operation which will take you back to the state of the model prior to you entering the Sketch task.

Now someone might ask, well why not just do that anyway, if you actually HAD done nothing prior to you leaving the Sketch task, and it's possible that we might have been able to do that, but with this new NX 7.5 option, we have the added ability to no only 'get away clean', as it were, if we had done nothing, but we can also now 'get away clean' even if we had make a bunch of changes that we decided at the last minute that we just didn't want to have to live with, even for only the amount of time that it would have taken to perform an Undo after leaving the Sketch task.

Anyway, think about it a minute and see if you don't agree that this solution will be the best of all worlds, OK?

Thanks for the response John.
The list of things I look forward to seeing in 7.5 grows
every the day. (Now if only my boss would make that maintenance payment!)
Just to be clear it was GTAC that said it was a bug.
I suspected otherwise since I'd seen that behavior since NX5. As for giving Cad development the benefit of the doubt,
I generally assume everything is complicated.
Nevertheless, one has to wonder how hard it is to put in sketch enviroment a function that essentially is available outside the sketcher, in the form of undo. It seems to work whether you've made a change or not.

An update.

After testing this new 'Exit Sketch' option, I discovered, after speaking with the Sketch group leader, that while they were making the changes needed for this NX 7.5 'Exit Sketch' project, adding the ability to leave a Sketch editing session even if edits had already been made to the Sketch and still avoid an update of the model (i.e. take the model back to where it was before the user entered the Sketch task), that development had leveraged what they had done and made one additional change. That is, as originally requested in this thread, if you enter the Sketch task and do NOTHING which would result in the model having to be updated, that if you were to then select the 'Finish Sketch' button, that you also would be taken back to the state of the model before you entered the Sketch task with all evidence of your actions having been removed completely.

In other words, your 'bug' has been fixed in NX 7.5.
