Hello all

We have recently just had a hardware refresh and since the refresh I have had users making my ears bleed because before the refresh, when you created a sketch or entered one, it used to lock out the space mouse rotation automatically with only pan and zoom operating normally until you exited the sketch at which point rotation would swith back on.

Now I asked Mr J.R.Baker offline and he said that he doesn't recall such a setting in the variable files, but i definately remember swithching some thing on my own computer because I hated the rotation lock and this makes me think that out 300 CAD users have inherited my settings file.

Would anyone happen to know what the name of this variable is to I can stop the ear bending I'm getting from my user base....It's worth a big fat shiny purple star if you do. ;-) Many thanks in advance.

Best regards

Life shouldn't be measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the number of times when it's taken away...

I do not remember such a setting, but I would really like to see a setting in NX that prevents rotation (including spaceball rotation) while in a sketch.
Of course you can toggle it in Prefernces > 3D Input
before you get into the sketch

There was definately something I set, I'm sure of it. One of those settings where you enter 1 for on or 0 for off. I've searched and searched and can't find it! grrrr!

Are you sure it was in NX? Perhaps it was in the spaceball config?

No, definately NX, because our system behaviour has changed, it used to lock the sketch into pan and zoom only, but now it alows full rotation in sketch. I definately remember changing something. Curse my laziness for not documenting it.

Simon,

Check out this thread ... "Sketcher Locks into 2D mode: 3D Connexion Space Navigator, NX4" ... your 'issue' is related to the Connexion driver for NX.

Hi Phillip

I have searched for that thread and cannot find it?

Yes yes yes!!! that was it! I got confused over a thread where someone detailed a setting you could alter to turn of that annoying little fixed tool bar with the green tick red x and selection intent button and instead go straight to the selection intent main menu to save a button click. and it was the 3D connection dirvers that needed to be changed.

Thanks Phillip. A shiny purple star for you.

Simon,

What is the "annoying little fixed tool bar with the green tick red x and selection intent button" ?

This just goes to prove that old software adage that "One man's 'bug' is another man's 'feature'."

You know for exsmple when you select edit --> blank. In the top corner of the screen, a little fixed tool bar appears with the selection intent button on it and and X and a tick? Well you can set something so that this doesn't appear and it just pops open the full selection intent window saving yourself a few clicks.

Simon,

There is this variable that can be used in NX4 ... Enable the Class Selection = Dialog NX_FORCE_CSD=1

That what you're looking for ?

Thanks Philip.

Just to throw in my 2 cents, I rarely sketch in the sketch view, unless it's one of the very first sketches of my part. In fact, I invoked whichever setting it is so that the sketch won't automatically change to the sketch view when I begin sketching. Most people look at me like I'm nuts.

Then you'll just love NX 7.5 since you will now have the option to create/edit Sketches using what we call the 'Direct Sketch' method anytime you wish without even having change to the 'task' environment. The sketcher will just be another toolbar that you can select functions from while working in Modeling. Now we haven't changed what constitutes a Sketch, just that we're giving you an additional option (which you can mix or match as the mood hits you or you can even make it the default method) when it comes to actually creating or editing a Sketch.

That sounds really nifty. We actually have 7.5 installed here but we can't use it for some reason. Has something to do with our license server hardware or something. It also doesn't help that most of our workstations are still running Win 2000.

Man we're cheap here....I mean, I love working here! ; )

We are still running NX4 which is driving me crazy, I'm waiting on my license for NX7.5 for my sandpit workstation, so I'm really looking forward to playing with 7.5. But looking like another 12 months till we upgrade due to the hardware costs. (£3.5 million !!!)

Simon,

Frankly I don't know how many users you have or how bad your hardware is but I would have thought, putting implementation costs to one side, that most hardware runs the later versions better if anything. What if any comparative testing have you done?

300 users, 10 servers, we have been told that to upgade NX, we would need to upgrade our TCEng as later versions of NX are not certifed or support with Teamcenter Jurrassic V9 that we are running. Apparently later versions of Teamcenter also require more advanced servers than the ones we are using, and this is the expense, 10 new shiney servers and after the recesion we have just been through, we've been told to keep polishing the turds that we have got as we have to get director approval for a first class postage stamp so £3.5m is out of the question :-(
