Trying to get info on a skewed hanger and if there is one that is weldable? This would be a 2x12 into the side of a HSS beam, at 45 degrees. So far Simpson has not provided any good feedback when I contact them about this. I can add a nailer to the sides of the beam, but trying to get away from that. My last resort too would be to try and frame in perpendicular to the beam, and use a regular hanger, which can be welded.
Thanks

I don't know of one. For single joists the sheet steel they use is generally too thin, so I'm not even sure if the framing it square option would work that well. Some of the beam hangers are a bit heavier and can be welded to structural steel successfully. How thick is the wall of the HSS? Simpson has some good wood-to-steel screws that would simplify the nailer if the wall is thin enough. If it isn't, thne PDPAWL pins would be a good alternative.

What about just having a custom made seat welded to the HSS in the shop? How many of the joists do you need to support?

phamENG,
Thanks. They do have a line of non skewed hangers that can be welded.
Didnt think about screws or a PDPAWL pin, the thickness should be 3/16 or 1/4"

Will look into those options. thanks.

Oh yea....they do have a few that you can weld the top flange clips, don't they? Forgot about that. You're welcome. Hope you can find a good solution.

@ jayrod12, it would be about 15 on 2 beams, so 30. I would bolt on a nailer before that.

What area are you located? Here in the southeast our Simpson rep is very responsive and would definitely give you some information on this (I have even had them give me some unpublished data in the past and help me work through some unusual/ applications for some of their products).
Here is a screenshot from their catalogue. It looks like HU is a slam dunk for this one if you are looking for face-mounted hangers.

I have a whitepaper on welding HU joist hangers somewhere. I can probably dig it up if you cannot find it on Simpson's website.

RWW0002, I did get that info from Simpson, but I am wanting to use a skewed hanger. They dont have any info on welding a skewed hanger. What Simpson told me was the skewed hanger is light gauge, could find a welder to weld it, but I would have to calculate the capacity.

I have reworked my framing so the skewed framing now goes into a wood beam, and all is good with life.

thanks

Based on the table the HU has an allowable skew of 67.5° and to my knowledge is still the same 14 ga. material. They may be referencing field-skewable hangers which are likely lighter steel.

If you have reworked the framing then no worries, but HU/HUC is my go-to for quirky conditions as they are fairly versitile.
