Hello,

according to ASME VIII Div.1, is it permitted to weld a flat head to a skirt from pipe where outside diameter of skirt is smaller than head/shell? Or skirt shall have O.D.=head/shell? Thank you

IMHO, this would be a great example for Finite Element Analysis qualification

An important consideration that should be also explored is the problem of a hot vessel and a cooler skirt. There will be steady state discontinuity stresses developed there.

Additionally, this configuration of a massive flat vessel head and a thin walled skirt would be prone to long term cracking in applications where the vessel undergoes repeated heat-up and cooldown cycles.

In this case, MIN/MAX temp: 0-100°C, without particular temperature cycle

ElCidCampeador, if it is not prohibited it is permitted. See Fig. UW-13.2, sketches (e), (f), (g) for guidance.

Regards,

Mike

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand
