Hi,

I have this gear assembly with a freely rotate inner ring. In between is a bearing. Need to open up the ring because it is jammed. Anyone ever use similar parts before?

Any idea how to open up the ring? I suppose we need to press from top (first figure).

Hello,

if you have a slew bearing alike this one:

DON'T press. There's a plug or sthg somewhere where you can open up & get the balls out of the raceway. However, "jammed" might mean that the bearing is seriously damaged (broken ball, deadlock from debris) and the opening will not be possible by normal means. In general such maintenance should be left to a specialized company.. which might also be able to provide a replacement, just in case.

Hello Rol,

that's really helpful. we found a small pin for the ball bearing doorway on inner side. now still thingking how to take out the doorway. we managed to take out the pin already.

by the way, do you know what is the name for the top and bottom seals?

Cut the bearing out with a die grinder. There is no way you can reuse that bearing.

Compositepro - the assembly -is- the bearing. What would be cut out?

Sorry, I thought the bearing was pressed into the gear ring. So how could this part every be reused? The bearing surfaces that the balls ride on will be pitted by corrosion. Regrinding and replacing the balls with larger ones seems more expensive than a new part, unless that is already an established commercial process.

Possibly the cost of machining the races is worth saving the gear teeth, but I have little confidence of getting it apart without serious damage or cost. For example, I think it could be separated with wire EDM, sacrificing a small amount of race, but at a possibly too high a cost.

Maybe a good soaking in a rust remover?

Done soaking in rust remover for 1 night. Unfortunately, no luck.
Even the doorway for the bearing is unable to be open.
So the plan would be to cut the inner ring and make a new one or just buy a new set.

It took a while to get this way - it will take a while to undo that. 1 night seems insufficient.

Replacement seems like a good idea. From pictures corrosion = very bad news. The close tolerance between the mating surfaces are most likely to be severely damaged. It may cost more to repair than to just replace it. Bearing surfaces have to precise.

The most expensive part of this slew ring is the outer gear section, and the gear teeth look to be in fairly good condition with minimal corrosion thanks to a coating of grease. There are companies that specialize in refurbishment of slew rings, so it would be worth giving them a call if you have not already done so. I'm sure these companies have refurbished slew rings in far worse shape than yours.

Ya it's not the gear I was worried about it's the bearing race surfaces, if corrosion got in there , and it's pitted, rusted, and the the dimensions have been compromised, it will be a tough job to repair, even if it was ground oversize & engineered chrome and regrind, it will be a tough go at it. the other side because the bearing failed how bad was the gear damaged. it would have to be re inspected and re qualified. to my opinion it's throwing money out the window.

Preferably a new one at this stage. The supplier is offering for 1200 pound. Repairing can't give any guarantee. Takes more times also.
Same unit from China is USD300++. Just for info only. The material could substandard.

if you are in UK, also check other EU manufacturers. 1200gbp seems excessive for such a small ring (since this is a light version with reduced load capability and cheap-ish)
Rotis, PSL, Rollix.

i wouldn't source it from china though.

it seems that it doesn't have upper seals though. I think it's probably a write-off, if you haven't removed them yourself just prior to taking the picture.

1200 pounds sterling seems pretty reasonable for this brand spanking new slew ring from the factory. Frankly, I imagine it costing far more.
