Hello,

Table J3.1 in AISC 13th Edition gives the minimum bolt pretension values (148 kips for a 1.5 inch A490 bolt). I have to design a slip-critical connection using equation J3-4. Can I use a higher value for bolt pretension (160 kips) in this equation? Does AISC specify the maximum bolt pretension value for bolts?

I am using a slotted hole (hole length= 2.625 inch). As per AISC the hole factor for a short slotted hole (hole length is 1.875 inch for 1.5 inch bolt) is 0.85 and for a long slotted hole (hole length is 3.750 inch for 1.5 inch bolt) is 0.70. Can I use the linearly interpolated hole factor of 0.79 for hole length of 2.625 inch?

Regards,
Su
