Hi

What is slip fit?
I searched machinery hand book, but could not find information on slip fit.
Where can find the tolerances for slip fit?
What is the standard way of designating slip fit? For example we use H7/p6 for press fit similarly what we specify for slip fit?

Thanks

No slip fit?

You're looking for information & description on "fits" and their tolerances. It's all in Machinery's Handbook, and is generally presented as a discussion of shafts in holes. There are different grades of fits, as asimpson indicates. "Slip fit" is an old school term and is only useful as a generic description.

Basic rule of thumb, 0.005 inch on diameter between static parts, Pistons usually are 0.003 inches on diameter or less.

As correctly pointed out by ASimpson, there are classification of fits which are application specific. He lists the metric version, imperial are equivalents noting 1.0 inch = 25.4 mm.

There are several good references on this, look to the web. But the Machinist Handbook does discuss this, at least in the 23rd edition.
