Sloped Columns

As a rule we limit sloping concrete columns to 1:6, Is this based on the aci offset bar slope of 1:6? Is this a code requirement? What are the issues with sloping more than this?

Do you mean intentionally sloping columns for some architectural purpose or are you talking about tolerances from an intended vertical column?

Yes, it is common in our residential buildings for the column locations to not align in the below grade parking and the residetial units, we pick up the difference by sloping the columns at on level. The rule of thumb is 1:6 but, i am wondering if this can be extended.

If your column slopes then you would have an eccentric axial load that would produce horizontal forces in your building. As long as you follow this load through your building and design for these forces in your floor diaphragm and lateral bracing systems any slope conceivably could be used.

The building will want to lean/deflect so servicability would have to be checked as well. I don't know of any ACI code issue in the U.S. that would prohibit sloping your columns more than 1:6.
