Hey guys, i have a situation where my detailer slotted the tube column at base plate due to its larger brace force, however it seems to be wrong as far as i know, has anyone encounter a same situation?

Guys, i'm agreeing the weld symbol is wrong, will change as per your advise...
Note that both weld symbols for the gusset-to-tubes connections are similarly wrong...not just the weld to the column.

Can anyone get me a buckling stress calculation for this eccentric 1/2" plate? Either AISC or CISC would be better

Thanks in advance!!

Veer007,

I wouldn't scratch my head to do the detailer's work. Bring this problem to his attention, he might have explanation ready, or he has to change/modify the design, as this is not a simple issue. Is this a tension only brace?

Brace has both compression and tension
... By the way i have to cross check the connection before i send to EOR.

Thanks in advance!!

Veer007,

I suggest do one of these:

1. Get permission from EOR to communicate with the detailer directly by you.
2. Check the brace side plate for member subjects to combined stress due to bending and compression (AISC CH.H?). Treat the plate as a fix end column (at brace connection), and free to translate at the free end (for trail, I would assume at center of the bolt row closed to the brace), for compression check, k = 1.2. M = C*t[sub]p[/sub]. This approach can give you a quick feel how critical the problem is. You can also check the buckling stress using equations on AISC CH.E (13th ed)
