What is a slug nipple? And is it used in steam application?

I have never heard of a slug nipple. It might be the same thing as a hydraulic nipple.

A hydraulic nipple looks like a nipple on the outside, but it is made from round stock with a small I.D. bore to control flow. It works similar to an orifice plate for restricting flow.

Ya.. I also saw it first in a P&ID on a steam line where it is located on the bypass line of a Pressure control valve after the bypass valve.

Can I get some more info on the hydraulic nipple which is being talked about?
