I'm looking for a non-contact density meter to monitor solids content of a 3 - 8% municipal sludge application.

We have nuclear density meters onsite and the problem is that they require constant cleaning, making the instrument unreliable.

The thickened primary sludge periodically creates a fat buildup on the inside of the pipe. The pipe is heat traced to reduce the effects of pipe lining by grease and fats.

Does anyone have a well proven density meter, or is there an alternative way to measure solids content online?

Thanks
Andrew

Sampling and laboratory testing is the most reliable and accurate method for all the reasons that you have given.

Nuclear instruments carry problems of having registrered operators and units in some countries. Also there is always some occupational health and safety backlash. Having said that , if you have the instruments in place could you implement a routine cleaning with hot water or steam. This could be a ,amnual clean using a portable hot water generator of made automatic if you have these services available.
