SM490 Plate material properties? (Japanese material Requirement) 1

Hello all. I was hoping that someone could point me in the right direction with this material. Our customer is specifying the use of "SM490" plate. I'm unfamiliar with this material specification, and the customer is not being much help. Does anyone have the material spec's for this? (or where I could go to find this)

Is the ASTM equivalent ASTM A242?

I took a look at this using Google. This will not be as easy as it looks. After a quick review of several papers;

Here is the reported chemical composition ranges, which depend on product form and thickness;

SM 490A,B, C, YA, YB (not sure if these are strength grades)

Carbon content range 0.18% max, and for thicker grades 0.22% max
Mn 1.60% max
Si 0.55% max

P 0.035% max
S 0.035% max

Note; other alloy elements may be added as necessary (Ni, Cr and Cu)

The reported strength levels in one of the technical papers depended on product form;

Yield Strength 3500-4030 kgf/cm²

Ultimate Tensile Strength 5400-5720 kgf/cm²


I would suggest you get your hands on JIS G3106-1992 or newer edition, Rolled Steel for Welded Structure for additional information on this material.

You are in luck today. After I posted the above, I decided to check one other source on steel plates in my database.

My steel plate source book from JFE indicates the SM 490 (490 N/ mm² class of steel plate and SM490Y are equivalent to the following ASTM Standards;

SM490 ASTM A 572
SM490Y ASTM A 573

The tensile information above and the JIS G3106 still should be reviewed.
