I do not have my CWI references with me at this job site, but check the Certified Weld inspection (AWS is the source) documentation on line. They have the drawing/sketches used for testing weld tests.

1/2 pipe for the test?

yes racookpe, and thanks david

As it is multiple coupons would it not be less time consuming and more economical to RT the coupons ?

You wouldn't require multiple coupons if this is for performance qualification.

Standard Designation: BPV Section IX
Edition/Addenda: 2015
Para./Fig./Table No: QW-304.1
Subject Description: SC IX; QW-304.1 - Number of Test Coupons
Date Issued: 05/18/2017
Record Number: 16-2602
Interpretation Number : BPV IX-17-17
Question(s) and Reply(ies):
Question (1): Does it meet Code requirements that when doing a performance test on a 1" diameter coupon, the specimens shall be removed according to QW-463.2(d) and the size of the coupon would follow figure QW-462.3(a), note (b) and cut into quarter sections and bent utilizing only one test coupon?

Reply (1): Yes.

Question (2): Does the last statement of QW-304.1 starting with "Alternatively", this part of the section, including sub sections (a), (b) and (c) all describe qualification of the welder utilizing production welds and the reference to 6" length deal entirely with volumetric NDE?

Reply (2): Yes.

David,
I think it is very strange you would need to weld 1 x coupon if bend testing is the option, 2 x coupons if volumetric examination is used.
I will follow this up,
Cheers,
Shane

We do not bend test a 1/2 dia pipe at our training/weld cert facility, but qualify the welders in all-position welding (6G position) on pipe walls machined thick enough to qualify all wall thicknesses. The test "pipe" is cut into 4 coupons at the four quadrants, and all 4 coupons must pass the side bend test.

David,
My mistake.
In 35 years in the game I have never seen or heard of bend testing being used for performance qualification so was totally unaware of QW 452.1(a)requirements.
Right through the Southern Hemisphere it is exclusively RT with UT being used on the odd occasion.
Cheers,
Shane

How do you qualify all pipe dia under 1" without using smaller dia pipe?
I'm kinda new to this and maybe confused. In Ontario our WOC (welder/welding operator cert)testing on 2" in the 6g will only qualify you down to 1".
I thought pipe dia played a roll in this as well.
Btw as David mentioned this test is for performance not procedure and it is in our test shop. We have guided bend testers for aluminum, thin and thicker material.
I prefer guided bend tests to radiography, because in my opinion they show faults that RT might not.
Thanks
Dave
