I am looking at delivering powder slurry (ceramic, quite abrasive) to an atomizer. Flow rate is about 0.5 lpm. Now, the question is what kind of pump is better:
1. Progresive cavity type or
2. Double-diaphragm

Dilema:
#1 provides non-pulsating flow, but I would have to go with bigger pump running at low rpm (100-200) which also means more slurry in dead-space (not good when running for a short time periods and swithing between different feeds).

#2 provides (even though 2 diaphragms) pulsating flow, but check valves can erode/plug up.

In both cases I would rely on the pump for flow metering.

Thanks,
Nick

What is the largest size solid in the slurry that the pump must pass?

What backpressure will the pump see?

What is the slurry rheology?

Good luck,
Latexman

Particle size is <1 micron, backpressure is 60-80 psi and, although I don't have viscosity value, looks like 10-20 % lime slurry.

Have you ever looked at a Hydra-cell pump by Wanner Engineering?

They have a small, one diaphragm pump (F/G-20) and a small, three diaphragm pump (D/G-03) whose capacity may work for you. You may need a gear reducer or low speed motor and a VFD. I'd recommend the 3 diaphragm pump if it'll work, as it'll be essentially pulse-less at the frequency it's diaphragms will be working.

I have used their larger models with a VFD and they control flow real nice. We oversize them and run them at a lower speed than the capacities are given to reduce noise and increase longevity.

Call them and tell them what you are doing. They have always been very helpful to me.

Good luck,
Latexman

Thanks Latexman, I will call them.
