Small Electric Motor HELP!!

I must start this post by stating that I know very little about electric motors and need help. I purchased a item that utilizes a RAE Corp. electric motor. Here are the specs that I have: 115 volt A/C, 4900 rpm, 15 inch oz. of torque. The body size is 5" long and 3.25" in diameter. The shaft is 2" long and 5/16 thick with a flat side. The motor does run in both directions. I have contacted RAE and they do not produce this motor any longer nor do they have anything similar. I need to find a motor that has a similar body & shaft size but that produces more torque. Any speed greater than 2500 rpm would be fine. The motor needs to be able to run in both directions. I don't really care if the unit is AC or DC as long as I could use a 12 volt car battery to power it and it would have at least two or three times the power as this motor. Thank you in advance for any help!!

Sorry I do not have a source. My only advice is; more torque and more speed means more Power requirements. That will be hard to achieve into the same motor volume.

Is your comment directed at the 12Voltedness or Period? Could we suggest an inverter running another "different" motor?

Thanks for the info. Maybe I should post exactly what I am looking for in a motor and ask for suggestions. Here's what I need:

1/16 to 1/4 hp.
3000 to 5000 rpm.
reverseable.
2" long X 5/16 diameter shaft.
Body that is not more than 3.5 inches in diameter.
Variable speed (I have a foot control 115 volt already).
115 volt would be nice but 12 volt will work if I can use a car battery.

Any ideas??

thing to improve is may be efficiency.

Cut to the chase! What do you want it for?????!! There are motors with twice that power and half the size but without knowing the service/use recommending them may be pointless.

You are not getting a lot of response because you are providing very little guidance and fellow posters can see the writing on the wall, as soon as they post a response some further detail will dribble out completely invalidating their original effort.


You are confuzing the issue with the 12VDC 115VAC waffling. Which do you want? Both?[aint gonna happen]

Sorry for the abruptness but I constantly see requests for help by people who provide truely meager information about complex subjects then watch as people try to help. If you went to a car mechanic you would do your very best to describe the problem, when it occurs, how it sounds, how it feels, etc. etc.

So please do tell us everything you need in this motor and what its purpose is for so we can help solve your problem.

I need this motor for a line winding maching. I am not trying to waffle I can use either type. The motor simply sits off the the side of the winder and has a gear on the shaft that runs a belt. I can plug it into a electric socket or run it off of a 12 volt car battery. My needs are as posted before, the only thing that is not completely nessary is variable speed. Sorry for being so stupid about this but as I stated in the beginning I know nothing about electric motors.

Okay so we are talking intermittant duty?

Like a minute or two followed by 10 minutes? Once a day or all day everyday? Is this like fishing line weight stuff?

Thats it. The line winder simply turns the reel handle for you. Many of our reels hold over 600 yards of fishing line and it takes forever by hand. The motor may need to run for up to say 10 minutes straight, then sit idle for a few minutes while I mount a different reel. I would never need to spool more than 4 reels in a day and might only do 30 all year.

Ah very good. Sounds like 12VDC might be the best solution allowing anywhere winding.

Look into hobby motors. They're designed for horrible abuse and are small and light. They aren't made to run day in and out. Look for one happy at 12V. There are a lot that range from 9.6V to 18V. Any over 12V would probably work fine. Cigarette lighter here we come!

These are all smaller than what you are asking for but generally adapters can be fabricated to make things bigger easily as apposed to the opposite case.

You may fine a shaft size adapter. If not any machinest can crank you one out easily!

You need a battery powered drill, or at least parts of it

And before you dismiss the idea, consider the following:

Small, compact DC Motor, operates at a full range of VDC (9 to 32 volts, depending on the model you buy), is cheap, has a transmission, lots of torque, ready made power supply system (chargers, batteries that last about 30 to 60 minutes) etc., etc....

I have repaired lots of battery powered tools and found that almost ALL of them use the same set-up in terms of motors. The transmissions are one item that separates most. Some use all metal gears which adds expanse and life to the unit Vs the ones with the plastic type gears.

Anyway, if all you need is the motor, then the battery drill gives you the bonus of all the other parts you may need, like the variable speed switch. With some additional "re-engineering" , you could even use the transmission and gain some torque. Use your imagination...

You can get these, 18 volt units, on the cheap (50 to 100 bucks) at your local Home Depot, Lowes, or wherever....
