I'm looking for a very small worm gearbox, preferably less than 1" by 1" (the thickness doesn't matter much). I've already looked on globalspec and thomasnet with less than promising results. I was wondering if anyone here knew of a specific company that manufactured gearboxes this size or even smaller? (Hopefully ones that can still hold a pretty decent torque)

This may not help you. Or it may stimulate some thought to lead you to a solution.

I once had a need for a tiny worm set. I ended up using a 64 DP cast zinc gear against a modified #4-40 screw. The screw thread was modified by filing it while rotating in the lathe to better fit the gear teeth. In use, the gear axis was rotated about six degrees to better fit the gear teeth. Worked like a champ!

..."a pretty decent torque" what kind of specification is this? As an engineer to engineers you should give a number with units. You didn't specify the gear ratio either!!

insideman: Thanks and that's very clever, but it won't do for my particular application

israelkk: You're right, I wasn't very specific, but that's because what I am looking for is a company that sells small gearboxes off the shelf. If it was within my budget to get a custom one I would have just e-mailed one of numerous companies and not bothered asking around. Then again, if you know a company that can make custom gearboxes relatively cheaply, let me know about them too please!

MikeHalloran: I went to that site and couldn't find any mention of gearboxes whatsoever. It looks to me like they make a few specific laboratory-related products.

diskullman: Thanks!

Supper's stuff is interesting because it's beautifully made, has little lash or trajectory error, and is capable of decent torque within a very small envelope. It's made for limited rotation and limited life in a benign environment, but there's no reason they couldn't make a derivative gearbox for you.

Or you could. Buy some of their stuff to get an idea of what I'm talking about.

I used to love Berg's catalog for its clarity, but I haven't done business with them in decades, because of deliveries running into months on what were alleged to be stock parts

Maybe they've changed.
