Retired military needs a device for home use to move a 1ft x 18 inch platform back and forth 2 feet; thrust +/- 50 lb. Cover distance in 10-14 seconds.

Malfunction/jam disconnect needed, plus operator capability to reverse direction of platform before completion of cycle.

Speed variation a plus.

Drive a threaded shaft with a motor. You may use a gearhead motor.
Use a small three phase motor and a VFD. The Variable Frequency Drive will give you speed control reversing and may be programmed to provide jam detection/protection.

I agree with Bill, I also recommend a threaded shaft.

When you use a shaft with lead 1/5 '' your specifications become:
Torque = 50 lb *1/5 '' = 10 lb.in
Average speed = 2 ft * 12 = 24 inch in 10 seconds or 720 rpm with lead 1/5''.

In the specAmotor site ( you can use those two values (10 lb.in and 720 rpm) to find the best motor for your platform:
1) U12M4LR:forcedair electric motor from Danaher
2) Baldor BSM50N-175 with reduction

These motors are a bit overdimensioned but if you do not drive the motors 100% of the time than you can add a Duty Cycle and probably suffice with smaller motors.

You can build it yourself or buy it pre-packaged. Some vendors of these type of devices:

Yamaha Robotics
Parker
Danaher Motion
And plenty of others. You may even find this kind of stuff cheap on eBay, Craig's List, or industrial equipment auction sites.
