Smart component assembly problem

When I try and insert a smart component part into an assembly the icon that appears for activating the smart mate comes and goes so fast I can't click on it. How do I slow this down? Also, the smart component cover doesn't recognize the hole pattern in the housing part so it's not fully constrained like I want it to be.

To be more clear it's not a smart component yet. I'm trying to make it into one but can't get the smart mate to work and it doesn't find the hole pattern.

A Smart Component creates the hole/feature into which it fits ... it doesn't locate itself into pre-existing holes.

The first thing I would like to do is get the smart mate to work. I've already defined a mate references on the cover part but I can't get it to work
