Is there anyone that uses an Excel plugin with SMath? Which plugin do you use and do you find it very good. Is it possible to reference the excel file without embedding the document? Is there something like a VLOOKUP function? and can you embed a dropdown list (another plugin likely)?

dik - first, thanks for introducing me to SMath. Pretty neat. I've been using it for a couple weeks now.

I was also curious about drop downs. Looks like the Combobox add-in is one way to go. Haven't implemented it myself.

I'm also curious about the Excel plugin. Maybe it's a comfort thing, but I'd prefer to be able to define a variable using VBA rather than the limited boolean programming available in SMath. Then again, maybe I just need to dig deeper in SMath's programming. I'll be watching this thread with interest.

I've been using it for years and it gets better... slowly. Do a lot of my design using it and you can easily cut and paste between programs...

I've not integrated Excel with Mathcad in a while, but when I did, it was because Excel still has the better graphing capabilities. Near as I can tell, SMath's graphing capabilities are on the same order as Mathcad's.

I learn about Smath Studio from this forum and I found it very useful. Another more complicated software is Maple.

I have this Smath Studio calculation on 7 stories mid-rise and I don't know whether it is correct. Can someone check it for me?

I posted it before and somehow it is deleted so I post it again.

The calculation is on beams, girders, and columns. The calculation doesn't have to be exact. I just need an initial size to input into Midas Gen 2014 and Midas Gen 2014 will do the rest. The building is a moment frame. Two beams lie on one girder with a spacing of 3m. The are girders are 9m long. The girders' spacing is 9m. The columns are 15ft high. The building is 36m by 60m.

I have refined the calculations.

disclaimer: all calculations and comments must be checked by senior engineers before they are taken to be acceptable.

I won't check a building structural calc, but I'm writing just to remind you to be mindful of site rules. If you are posting because you're stuck with software (or any other kind of problem) and can show that you have truly made an effort to solve it, then we are happy to help. If you arrive expecting me to grade your homework, then your post gets red-flagged and deleted. This question you're asking is somewhere in between the two. Ask yourself which one it's closest to, and that will explain why it may have been deleted once before (and may again this time). I'm not red-flagging - I'm giving you this warning.

Sorry MrOnlineTutor -- you're out of your depth here.

You seem to have a basic confusion between modulus of elasticity, concrete compressive strength, and some unknown steel material parameter.

A moment frame building column cannot be sized by compressive resistance alone. Lateral loads will be important, but are not mentioned anywhere in your calc. Neither are geotech/foundations.

As has been mentioned before, Midas will not "do the rest". Software isn't far enough along to replace us structural engineers, not yet. Even when used perfectly, computers don't yet know about constructability, erectability, or economy. (Least weight is not least final cost).

It will give you a pretty answer, if used correctly, it may even give you an answer that is structurally adequate. But it won't give you a good design.
