Smear on the rotor surface (electric motor)

Dear all

Can somebody explain me the meaning of the term smear, I am dealing with some document that speak about the smear is caused by the cutting tool when the diameter of the rotor is finished.

Any picture?

Smearing of laminations is any surface damage across laminations on the bore of stator or the O.D. of rotor that tends to short-circuit the laminations together. A given degree of smearing is generally not as much a concern on the rotor as on the stator since steady state frequency seen by rotor is much lower (resulting in lower importance of rotor lamination insulation compared to stator lamination insulation).
