Smoke detectors in beam pockets

Article A-2-2.4.3 of NFPA 72-1999 provides the criteria for placement of heat detectors in beam pockets. Other articles specify "smoke or heat" detectors.
Is it acceptable to use the referenced article to justify installation of smoke detectors in beam pockets?

I don't have a 1999 available, but in 2002, the references are 5.6.5.3 for heats, and 5.7.3.2.4 for smokes.
