Snipping Strands of Stranded Conductors

I have always thought that the Code (CEC and/or NEC) inhibited the snipping off of some strands of conductors - say for example - to make a larger conductor fit into a smaller lug. I thought that the correct way to do it would be to crimp on a reducer (for example if you use #10 or #8 for voltage drop to an outlet that has terminals for #12).

However, I can not find a specific code item for this. Perhaps it is just good practice?

The lug will be listed for use with certain conductor sizes and will have instructions for use. Anything outside of that means the lug is not correctly applied and is a code violation. And stupid.

DPC is right. You won't find a specific code reference for snipping strands. Following manufacturers' instructions is implied.

Best to you,

Actually, it is in there. 110.14 (A)

Terminals. Connection of conductors to terminal parts
shall ensure a thoroughly good connection without damaging
the conductors...

"Will work for (the memory of) salami"

I can hear it now - "I cut off the strands so they wouldn't get damaged." [cheers]

There is also 110.12 - "Electrical Equipment shall be installed in a neat and workmanlike manner."

Our specs generally reference NECA standards as well.

Thank you all. Same page (I rejected install).
