Our physical server machines are getting old and we are starting to have some issues with them - my IT guy wants to put them on a virtual server running Windows Server 2008R3. The only KB article I see is from early 2010 (where the answer was NO).

So now 2.5 years later -

is it possible to run the SNL server on a VM?
is it possible to run the PDMW server on a VM?
Is it possible to keep the vault data and toolbox folders on a VM?

bomaed,

You should ask your VAR these questions and for their help in setting this up. It is part of their service to you.

yes, I have - they typically won't reply if they don't have an answer.

Um, what? It's their JOB to get you the answers to your SolidWorks questions, assuming you're on subscription. If they aren't helping you, I would strongly suggest switching VARs if there is another one in the area.

Our SW server is virtual. It is running Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard. I believe that we are using Hyper V as the VM host. We do not have a SNL server, but it is acting as our PDMW server with the vault in the virtual machine. Our toolbox is also on a shared folder of the virtual server.

I think we have been running on this virtual server for about 2 years now. We have used SW 2009, 2010 and 2011 with this setup. I have not had any problems of note with the server. My impression is that it is a bit slower to populate the check in / out dialog than when we had a physical server, but not by a significant amount.

Jeff - yes, that's in the works - we stuck with them since they training center was very close to us - but another VAR is supposedly building a center in our area and we have been in contact with them.

Eric - thanks for that info - i will relay that to my IT guy - hopefully it will improve our current state!
