socket weld flange vs slip on flange

What are the advantages or disadvantages of both? Why not just use socket weld flange for everything?

Socket-Weld fittings and flanges are NORMALLY used on 2" (DN 50mm) and smaller piping in non hygienic services and projects.

Slip-On flanges are NORMALLY used on low pressure, low temperature non-toxic services in sizes 3" (DN 80mm) and larger.

Exceptions may be made or required in both cases depending on specific situational conditions and/or Client specific directives.

What are the advantages? The answer to this is Safety and Cost.

Why not just use Socket-weld flanges in both cases? Have you tried to buy 12" (DN 300mm) Socket-Weld Flanges?
 
Slip-ons require the welding of TWO fillets. Relying on a single fillet weld at sizes beyond 2" is not permitted in most piping codes. So even if you could get larger socket welding flanges, you'd only be able to use them for non-hazardous and non-code services.

Slip-on flanges give alittle "fudge-factor" when your cutting them into an existing system.
 
Please regard to ASME B31.3 requirements:
For Slip-On Flanges: 308.2.1
For Socket Welding Flanges: 308.2.3 & 311.2.5
