hello i recently installed a ground source heat pump in my house. it is supplied by a well that was already on the property. i am most proud of the fact that i raised my efficency in my house and that i am less dependent on the oil companys.
my concern is when the unit stops its cycle. the compressor drops out with a considerble thump. is there a simple device that i could put on the motor circuit that will soften the shut down of my new hvac unit. the concern i have is for the shock to the copper pipes and the joints in the freon system. thank you ever so much for your time. also in closing i would recomond this type of hvac system to everyone. thanks barry

The newer heat pumps have moved to inverter drives in order to avoid the tough starts/stops and also (mainly) to adapt speed to demand, which makes the compressor work continuously instead of cycling on/off. Check with your heat pump supplier if you cannot get an inverter retrofitted. I have inverter drives on my heat pumps and they make a lot of sense.

If it is a 1 phase residential service as I suspect, soft starting or variable speed drive devices can only be used on a very narrow group of motor types, so you would need to know the motor design before proceeding. Also, because of lubrication and electrical heating issues it is unwise to alter the control of a heat pump without consulting the manufacturer.
