Soil load on suspended pipe in weak soil

For an existing 50 year old 6" diameter cast iron drain pipe suspended at 5 foot centres from a structural slab above, how should the force on the hangers due to the soil on top of the pipe be calculated? The soil above the pipe is fill underlain by sandy silt till of 12 blows per foot. The soil below the pipe is also sandy silt till of 12 blows per foot, but vastly improves at several feet below the pipe to 60 blows per foot. I am estimating because the nearest borehole (done in 1965) was 50 feet away from the location I am currently interested in. The situation of suspending a pipe below a structural basement floor (the floor is supported on drilled piers down to good soil) is fairly common, so there must be an accepted way of calculating the hanger load, but so far I have not found it. Perhaps there are tables for different soil conditions that give the hanger load. Any geotechnicalengineers who can help me?

BigInch,

I think in this case it is acceptable, as after not getting agreement from structural engineers, he is trying to obtain advice from a different audience.

I can see where one might think that, but generally double posting is frowned upon.

Would not a request to review the other thread (link) be more efficient? It also tends to consolidate all opinions into a more acceptable result, not to mention increase value of the Eng Tips database when referenced in the future, as well as reduce search time.

There are 3 separate threads for this same topic,
This thread
This one thread678-415908
And another one thread507-415524

ajk1 please red flag (for deletion) all but the one thread that you want to retain.
Thanks
