Solar Power plant over Irrigation canal

In the suburb of the city where I live in India, a 10 MW photovoltaic power plant was inaugurated in January,2015 by UN Secretary General Ban-Ki-Moon.It is built over a 3.6 KM stretch of irrigation canal,saving 90 million litres of water per annum from evaporation and saving 16 hectares of land for power plant.
 
I think it's been discussed here already.

Maintenance will be interestng.

India is planning to add 100,000 MW from solar within next 15 years. Tall target indeed. In case solar really suceeds,I believe, we may have to convert all hydro power stations in to pumped storage schemes. Day time solar pumping up water and power generation from hydro at night. In effect, water dams acting as a big lithium battery.

I am planning to go to India to talk to India Government about this solar project. I hope to meet you over there!

We have a similar Project (PISF) running in the Northeast of Brazil, a very sunny and dry region. The PISF has more than 470 km of canals, 270 km of 230 kV transmission lines, 9 step down 230/6.9 kV substations and 9 pumping stations totalizing 200 MW of motor load. The already anthropogenic area is 200 m of width along the canals.

Our idea is to analyze the feasibility of installing solar photovoltaic panels over the water canals focusing on the benefits of using renewable energy sources to help the energy need to pump water and, also, to reduce the evaporation losses. So, I need as much information as you can provide about Indian Project.

Any data on how saving 90 million litres of water per year from evaporating was calculated. That number seems very high from just covering a 3.6km stretch of the a canal.
