SolidEdge FEA Simulation

I currently use Abaqus for all my FE work. I don't actually use SolidEdge, but have heard that it can do FEA analysis. I have also be cautioned about trusting FEA packages lumped in with CAD software.

My questions is does anyone actually use SolidEdge for FEA? What do they think? How far can it go, what are its limitations? How much control do you have over element selection, partitioning the part for meshing, nonlinear analysis etc.?

SolidEdge ST8 SIMULATION is a FEA tool for design engineers to digitally validate part and assembly designs within the Solid Edge environment. With Solid Edge Simulation you can create finite element models for solid and sheet metal structures automatically, as well as make adjustments to refine the mesh to improve accuracy of the results. For assemblies, Solid Edge Simulation offers automatic contact detection and sets up realistic component interaction, including iterative linear and glued contact. It is based in FEMAP and use the NX NASTRAN solver, but don't pretend to compite againts FEMAP or any other "porfessional" FEA solver in the market, is quite limited in both finite element library, meshing capabilities & analysis types, but is scalable: any FE model created in ST8 simulation can be exported to FEMAP (both geometry, mesh, material properties, loads & BCs) to enhance or complete according the FEA needs of the specialized FEA analist.

Great summary.

How easy is it to parameterize a model? A large portion of my work in Abaqus is taking some base more and paramaterizing it and then doing optimization and case studies.

Parameterizing is native in SolidEdge CAD generation models, then ST SIMULATION takes advanced of any parameter you define to use it as design variables for the optization analysis.
